Q

What is the benefit of developing an employee manual?

A

An employee manual provides a guide for team members and acts as a quick resource when a personnel issue arises (Figure 5-7). (See the Evolve site accompanying this text for the complete document.) A manual can solve workplace problems quickly and fairly because topics and policies have already been determined. Employee manuals also hold managers and leaders accountable.

Q

What is a contract employee?

A

IRS code states that independent contractors are not required to follow instructions as to how to perform a task, duty, or job. The work must be performed at irregular intervals and cannot be full time. Contractors control their own hours and have the right to pursue other jobs. They must work without supervision and are paid by the job, not the hour. They are responsible for their own dues and licenses, which should be made available when contracted.
