What were the Sons of Liberty?

A

• A group of men who were extremely anti-establishment
• Staged both peaceful and violent protests
• Rough, tough and do anything for change (fight, make threats, vandalize)
• Sam Adams (founder), John Adams, Benedict Arnold, John Hancock, Patrick Henry
• *Sam Adams also created the Committee of Correspondence- a group that handed out
pamphlets and letters discussing current events and what Parliament is doing

  • A group that was the same as the sons of Liberty but more peaceful

• A Large group gathered in Boston Harbor dressed as
Native Americans and boarded a Merchant ship with Tea
• Burned and destroyed boxes of tea
• Civilians cheered

What were the Intolerable Acts?

A

• Makes an example out of the people of Boston by passing 4 laws “The
Intolerable Acts”
• Closed the Port of Boston
• Gave more power to the royal governor (weakens house legislatures, and
weakens town meetings)
• Anyone tried for the murder of a colonial official would be tried in
England/Canada
• Strengthened the Quartering Act and took weapons
