Why did England raise taxes?
War is expensive and put England in debt
What was the Sugar Act?
Placed a duty(tax) on molasses and sugar as
well as cracked down on smugglers
- Merchants/colonists protested the tax
What was the Quartering Act?
Used to enforce the Proclamation Act of 1763 and save money. People must house (quarter) soldiers and offer them food, clothes, etc.
- Colonists argued it violated their rights
What was the Stamp Act?
Parliament placed taxes on all paper goods (wills,
newspapers, cards etc.) for profit.
Civilians begin to protest by boycotting (refusing to buy goods) and smuggle
items
What caused the Stamp Act to repeal?
Colonial governments sends a petition to King George III and Parliament to revoke the taxes
What was with the Declaratory Act?
stating that they will repeal the Stamp Act, but REMEMBER, you work for us…. You are OUR colony
What was the Townshend Acts?
Townshend Acts
• Writs of Assistance- allowed to search ships without warning or
saying what they are searching for
• Taxed tea, paint, lead, glass, paper etc.
• Weakened the colonial assemblies
• Once again colonists begin to Boycott goods
What caused the Townshend Acts?
King George III wants Parliament to raise taxes
• Charles Townshend (Treasurer) warns that the colonies
are a powder keg about to explode if England keeps
taxing
What was the Tea Act?
Kept as a symbolic tax to illustrate the Kings/Parliaments power
• To help the British East India Company (large company in
England)
Why were colonists mad about the Tea Act?
• The principle over the price (NO TAXATION WITHOUT
REPRESENTATION!!!!!)
• Merchants were mad because it created a monopoly in the
colonies
What happened during Boston Massacre?
- Workers and sailors protest outside of a gov’t building
- They surround soldiers
- Yell insults, swear at them, throw rocks, snowballs etc
- Soldier fires into the crowd
- 5 people are killed including an African American colonial sailor
