Fracture Diagnosis Flashcards
Fracture Diagnosis
cracking/snapping sound. May be deformed, or just tender and swollen verified with an x-ray
Closed Fracture
bone is broken but hasn’t penetrated the skin
Open/Compound Fracture
bone is broken and has penetrated the skin. Easy to get infected and harder to heal
Green-stick Fracture
Isn’t a complete fracture through the whole bone. More common when younger as bone is more flexible
Comminuted Fracture
bone is broken into more than two fragments
Osteoporosis
Loss of bone mass and density that makes the skeleton brittle and prone to fracture.
Osteoarthritis
a degenerative joint disease that can be a result of ageing, wear and tear, or a response to a traumatic sports injury.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Autoimmune disease
Cartilage attacked
Inflammation, swelling and pain
Final step is fusion of the joint
Functions of Muscles
Producing movement
Maintaining posture
Thermoregulation (generating heat)
Storing and moving substances
How is movement produced?
- Force produced by muscle
- Force is transmitted to the skeleton by a tendon
- Movement occurs, Joint is stabilised, posture is maintained
Origin
the tendon attachment nearest the centre of the body
Insertion
the tendon attachment furthest from the centre of the body
Torque
force X perp distance from the pivot
Concentric Contraction
muscle is in tension and shortening
Eccentric Contraction
muscle is in tension and is lengthening
