Knee Flashcards
Bones that articulate at the knee
Femur
Tibia
Patella
Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)
stops tibia sliding out of the joint capsule, anterior movement of the tibia in relation to the knee
Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)
stops posterior movement of the tibia in relation to the joint capsule
Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL)
prevents varus movements of the knee (bow-legged position)
Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL)
prevents valgus movements of the knee (knock-knee position)
Menisci
shock absorbers, lubricate the articulation of the joint, stabilise the joint, ensure contact from the 2 condyles of the femur are even
Functions of the Patella
protect anterior structures from trauma
imbedded in the quadriceps and patella tendon
acts as a lever - increases the lever arm of the quadriceps
Q angle
represents the angle of the line of pull of the quadriceps
Chondromalacia Patella
runners knee
mistracking of the patella and damage to the patello-femoral cartilage
Risk Factors of Chondromalacia Patella
Genu Valgum (high Q angle)
Pronation
High patella
Weak vastus medialis
ACL Rupture
commonly non contact
cutting or landing movements - often very soon after ground contact
