Define addiction
Dependence on a drug due to repeated administration causing an overwhelming desire to continue administration
List the 3 components/consequences of addiction
- Physical dependence
- Psychological dependence
- Tolerance
What is the aim of harm reduction?
Reduce adverse effects of drug misuses until misuser stops misusing drugs
What are the 3 principles of harm reduction?
- Misuse of drugs is accepted but not approved of
- Treat user as a normal human being
- No guarantee to rid the world of drug misuse
What can be prescribed for addiction?
FP10MDA prescribed by GPs or drug treatment centre for a MAX supply of 14 days
List the Rx requirements on FP10MDA Rx
- Same as CD Rx
- Instalment amount and dose written separately
- Instalment direction of drug per instalment
- Interval between each instalment
- Each date of dispensing on NHS form
- Dispensing must start within 28 days of appropriate date
What is required for good practice for unsupervised doses collected by patient representative?
- Letter of authorisation from patient, which is kept at pharmacy
- Insist on seeing patient at least once a week
What happens if a patient misses dose?
- Prescriber notified
- If missed for 3 consecutive days the Rx is stopped, patient is reassessed.
Why dispense in daily dose bottles?
- Easier for patient to take accurate dose
- Reduce overdose issues
What can be prescribed to treat addiction?
Buprenorphine, diazepam

What are the two pieces of information included in an ‘instalment direction’?
- Amount of medicine per instalment
- Interval between instalment
