What is an E/S?
Urgent supply of a POM without a present Rx at the time of exemption
What law allows this exemption of requiring a Rx?
HMR 2012 for benefit of patients
State the 2 types of E/S
- Request of patient
- Request of prescriber
What must be gathered from the patient interview for a E/S at the request of the patient?
- Present immediate need
- Reason unable to obtain Rx
- Has the medication been previously prescribed?
- Consent to access PMR
What are the restrictions for supply of CDs and exceptions?
Cannot supply CD2/3 except phenobarbital for epilepsy
What is the MAX quantity that can be supplied for POMs?
30 days
What medicines/forms can be supplied for more than 30 days?
- Oral contraceptive
- Liquid antibiotic
- Inhaler
- Ointment/ Cream
- Insulin
List the legal labelling requirement for E/S at request of patient.
- Date of supply
- Name of drug, strength, form and quantity
- Patient name
- Name and address of pharmacy
- ‘Emergency supply’
- ‘Keep out of reach of children’
What legal records must be kept for E/S (request of patient and prescriber) list the legal requirements in any records

- Prescriber name and address
- Reason for supply i) purpose ii) reason why Rx can’t be obtained

How long should records be kept?
2 years
When can new medication to be given for an E/S?
at the request of prescriber
Are there any restrictions for CDs and quantity prescribed for an E/S at the request of a prescriber?
- Cannot supply CD 2/3 expect Phenobarbital for epilepsy
- Quantity does not matter for normal POMs
What is the legal requirement for obtaining a Rx for the E/S at request of prescriber?
