What type of service is CPCS?
Advanced service - patient referred to pharmacist via 111 or GP
What is this service for?
- Urgent supply or regular meds
- Minor ailment consultation
What are the aims of CPCS?
- Involve pharmacies in urgent care
- Improve patient awareness that pharmacies can help in the future
- Identify self management
- Reduce A&E, hospital and walk ins to reduce NHS costs
Briefly describe the 5 contractor requirements
- Meet all NHS essential services
- Notify NHS England via NHSBSA
- Staff are competent
- SOPs in place including key contact details
- Participate in local audit or urgent care organise by NHS 111 or local urgent care commissioner
Describe the requirements of consultation room
- Away from public
- Clearly designated as confidential area
- Sit 2 people and be able to talk without being overheard
- Have IT equipment
What are IT requirement?
- SCR
- NHS mailbox
- Pharmoutcomes - NHS 111 referrals
- Alert to GP that their Pt has requested CPCS
State the 2 types of CPCS referral
- Urgent med supply by 111 referral
- Minor ailments by 111 or GP referral
Describe the information to retrieve during the interview (FtF/telephone) with patient referred for urgent medicine supply by 111
- Name, address, DOB
- Explain service to patient
- Reason for request and emergency
- Name of GP
- Medicine request, previously prescribed?
- Is there urgent need?
- Appropriate without prescriber? abuse/acute
What should you do if the pharmacy does not have the stock for the request?
Use service directory to find other pharmacy and contact them & refer of they have med
What quantity does the HMR allow for supply?
- Up to 30 days
- Full packs of creams, inhaler, liquid antibiotics, insulin and full course for oral contraceptives
What are the CD restrictions for urgent supply?
- Max 5 days for CD 4/5
- Not allowed CD2/3 except phenobarbital for epilepsy
What must the dispensing label state?
‘Emergency supply’

- PMR
- POM reg
- Pharm outcomes
Describe referrals and escalation
- Out of hours or GP for CD 2/3
- Concerns - other services
What advice should you give patients?
- How to avoid running out of medicines again
- Importance of medicines on time
