Q

How does a formation split up when VMC in the MOA?

A

Lead will coordinate with ATC for flight split up and separate squawk for Wing.
Lead will inform ATC who will recover first.
Once ready for flight split, Lead will clear off Wing with an ATC vector.

Q

How does a formation split up in IMC outside of the MOA?

A

Lead will perform an “Alpha check” to the primary recovery NAVAID by reading off the current bearing and range.

If the bearing/range is within +/– 5° and 1 NM, then Wing will respond with 2 same; otherwise, Wing will reply with bearing and range, and it will be Lead’s responsibility to determine where the discrepancy exists before clearing off Wing for recovery.

Wing will use Lost Wingman procedures IAW AFMAN 11-248 to obtain separation.

Q

In which positions should a formation plan to split up?

A

Break

Closed (Sequential closed for two is requested by Lead and is considered the standard pattern entry from a formation low approach. Do not use a crossunder to reposition Wing if he is on the inside. Instead, obtain clearance, clear in the direction of the closed pull and clear Wing off via a radio call (e.g. ‘Reno 2 cleared off.”). Wing will then pull closed, followed 5 seconds later by Lead.)

Crosswind (Aircraft closest to pattern direction turns first after cleared off, other aircraft waits 5 seconds. If desire is to stay in form in the pattern, make request with RSU)

Formation Breakout (Initiate climb prior to sending wing to route or fighting wing. If desired, lead can clear off wing at VFR entry)

16
Q

What are the Wing Approach / Wing Landing x-wind and weather minimums?

A

15 knots x-wind
No ice / snow or standing water
Highest of 500 - 1.5 or Approach mins

17
Q

What is the procedure for formation mid-air collision?

A

The FL should split the area and obtain separate chase ships. The FL will direct separate rendezvous locations (ex. split airspace, separate visual ground references, etc.) or coordinate for separate areas.

18
Q

What is the procedure for simple NORDO in formation?

A

The NORDO aircraft squawks 7600 if able
NORDO aircraft may change altitude if greater than 1000’ separation exists
Do no get closer than 500’ until visual and lead can signal a rejoin
Non-NORDO aircraft should take lead
Recovery should be thru Radar initial, or straight-in/instrument approach
