Formation of ions Flashcards
What are ions ?
Charged particles - they can be single atoms or groups of atoms
How do atoms become ions and why ?
atoms lose or gain electrons to form ions
To get a full outer shell like noble gases. Atoms with full outer shell are very stable
How do metals and non metals become ions
Metals lose electrons from their outer shell to form + ions
Non metals gain electrons into their outer shell to form - ions
The numbers of electrons gained or lost is the same as the charge on the ions e.g. if 2 electrons lost, then charge would be +2
Which elements most readily form ions ?
Group 1 and Group 2 - they’re metals and lose electrons to form + ion ( cations )
Group 6 and group 7 - they’re non metals and gain electrons to form - ion ( anion)
elements in same group have same number of electrons which they have to gain or lose to from full outer shell so they form ..
same charge ion
Magnesium symbol equation
Mg -> Mg ^ 2+ 2e^-
chlorine symbol equation
oxygen symbol equation
cl + e^- = cl^-
o + 2e^- = o^2-
