Elements Flashcards
What determines what the type of atom is ?
Atoms have different numbers of protons, neutrons and electrons, but, its the number of protons in the nucleus which determines what type of atom it is
What is a element ?
substance which contains atoms with same number of protons
There are about 100 different elements
All atoms of a particular element have …
Different elements have …
same number of proton
atoms with different number of protons

symbols
Define isotopes
Different forms of same atom which have same number of protons but different number of Neutrons.
So they have same atomic number, different mass number
Why is relative atomic mass used?
many elements can exist as a number of different isotopes - its an average mass taking into account different masses and abundances
relative atomic mass formula
sum of - isotope abundance x isotope mass number / sum of abundance of all the isotopes
