What is self-governance?
Colony with an elected government in which elected rulers were able to make most decisions without referring to the colonial power. Colonial power maintained control of colony’s foreign policy
What was the positives of self government?
Appease the people therefore prevent rebellion and revolution
Helping create a trading bloc which doesn’t require large costs
What are the disadvantages of self government?
Less likely that there would be a station of troops there
Potential of alienation of the population if the foreign policy was not favoured
May seek to forge relationships outside
