Fire Systems Flashcards
What is the power source for engine
and APU fire detection and protection?
Engine detection DC ESS
Engine protection HOT BATT
APU detection DC ESS
APU protection DC ESS
Will the APU shut down if a fire is detected
Only on the ground
Describe the APU fire detection systems
1 pair of fire detectors
Can one bottle be used for 1 compartment
and 1 bottle for the other compartment
No
Only one compartment gets both bottles fwd or aft
Will the APU fire extinguisher automatically discharge?
No
Describe the fire test
Press and hold the fire test button on the overhead panel for a minimum of 3 seconds (no more that 10 seconds if the APU is running or it will shutdown)
AURAL WARNING:
- Fire bell and triple chime
VISUAL INDICATIONS (Overhead Panel):
- Fire handle 1 & 2
- Cargo smoke fwd and aft
- APU fire extinguisher button and APU emergency stop top half of button
GLARE SHIELD:
- Master warning light left and right
EICAS:
- ENG FIRE 1 & 2
- CARGO SMOKE FWD/AFT
- APU FIRE
- ITT GUAGES FIRE
What happens to the fwd cargo compartment
in the event smoke is detected?
- Recirc fan shuts off
- Ventilation outflow valve closes
Are the cockpit and cabin protected from fire?
Yes
Cockpit:
- 1 hand held halon fire extinguisher
Cabin:
- 3 handheld fire extinguishers 1 fwd 2 aft
- 1 water aft
Describe the Engine fire detection systems
8 pneumatic fire detectors (2 Loops per engine)
What happens if the APU EMERG STOP button
is pushed after a fire has been detected?
- APU shuts off immediately (no 1 minute cooldown)
- APU FUEL SOV closes
- APU FIRE EXTG button illuminates
How long will the low rate bottle take to discharge
60 minutes
What happens if the APU EMERG STOP button
is not pushed after a fire has been detected?
After one minute the FIRE EXTG button illuminates
How are the engines and APU protected from fire?
Engines:
- 2 halon fire bottles
APU
- 1 halon fire bottle dedicated to the APU only
Can both engine fire bottles be used for 1 engine?
Yes
How are the LAVs protected from fire
Heat sensitive extinguishers in the LAV waste bins automatically discharge if a predetermined temperature is reached
How many extinguishing bottles are installed
for the cargo compartments?
2 bottles for both compartments
1 high rate and 1 low rate bottle
What happens when a engine fire handle is pulled?
Closes respective engine:
- FUEL SOV
- HYD SOV
- BLEED SOV
What happens when cargo extinguishing button
is pushed if smoke has been detected?
High rate bottle discharges immediately
Low rate bottle discharges after 1 minute if the airplane is inflight
If airplane is on the ground, the low rate bottle
will not automatically discharge
What is the purpose of the recirc fan shutting off and
ventilation outflow valve closing when smoke
is detected in the fwd cargo compartment?
- Prevents oxygen from entering the compartment
- Prevents Halon from escaping
How many smoke detectors are in the cargo compartments?
- 3 fwd
- 2 aft
What airplane systems have fire detection and protection?
- Engines
- APU
- Cargo compartments
- Lavatories
During flight can the low rate bottle be
discharged before the minute is up?
Yes by pushing the extinguishing button again
Can cargo extinguishing be used if no smoke is detected
Yes the extinguishing button must be pushed twice once to arm the bottle and once to discharge the bottle
The low rate bottle automatically discharges after 1 minute if in flight or if the button is pushed a 3rd time on the ground
What is the difference between the
high rate and low rate bottle?
High rate bottle saturates immediately
Low rate bottle saturates over 60 minutes
How can the low rate bottle be discharged if
the airplane is on the ground
The extinguishing button must be pushed again
What is an indication of an APU fire?
- Fire bell
- Red stripe in the EMERG STOP button
- APU FIRE is displayed on the EICAS
