Fire Protection Flashcards
What are the 3 sub systems of FP?
Fire protection - Chemical
Fire protection - H20
Fire detection and alarm
What are the functions of the fire protection chemical system?
Detect, contain and extinguish all fires in areas where water is impractical
minimize loss of life and property
What are the functions of the fire protection h20 system?
Maintain a reliable source of water to fight and extinguish fires
provide water flow and pressure to supply the requirements at hose hydrants for manual firefighting
provide water flow and pressure required when wet pipe and/or pre action sprinkler systems are activated by fire detection equipment
What are the functions of the fire detection and alarm system?
provide fire/smoke detection capability in all plant areas that have the potential to expose safety related equipment to fire
Initial visual and audible alarms to warn plant personnel of a fire/smoke condition
What are some of the properties that make C02 a desirable extinguishing agent?
(CCR)
Non-combustible
Non-conductive
Non-reactive
How does C02 extinguish fires?
Suffocation and cooling
What areas are protected by the fire protection C02?
Battery rooms A-D
ESF switch gear rooms A & B
How is C02 flooding initiated?
When one smoke and one thermal detectors are actuated
The first alarm (a bell) actuates when one detection zone actuates
The 2nd alarm will be the pre discharge alarm for personnel to evacuate the area
What would you need in order to use a C02 hose reel?
SCBA and turnout gear
What is the source of the C02?
Cardox unit (also supplies steam generator purge)
What are the properties of Halon?
(TLC)
Non-toxic
Leaves little residue
non-conductive
What areas are protected by halon?
Remote shutdown room
inverter room
computer room
communications room
Number of halon containers in each space is determined by what?
Volume of space
What happens upon an activation of halon?
1st detector alarms to allow personnel to evacuate
2nd Isolates the room from the HVAC system and discharges entire bottle
In regards to FP - water system, how many pumps are there and their capacity?
Three 50% fire pumps along with a jockey pump that maintains header pressure with no loads on the system
