MA responsibilities
Lay out equipment, monitor pt., discontinue IV therapy, and pt education
Why do IV therapy?
- Gives good access for infusions medications, fluids, blood, & blood products & nutritional supplements
2 Pt may need fluid for dehydration or surgery
IV Fluids can contain what 4
Saline Solution with dextrose, sodium chloride & other electrolytes
Lacerated ringers most like human body Na+, K+, Ca, Cl
Begin IV Therapy
Use sterile technique
Be trained
Remember to prime tubing
Secure in place
Calculating drip rates
IV flow rates
Total volume infused= vol/hour

Gtts/min = vol infused 1 hr x gtts/ml

Monitor what 3 things
- Flow rate
- Check for infiltration, infection, and phlebitis
- Check every hour
Infiltration
IV fluids going into surrounding tissues
S/S: slowing of fluids ( pump may beep)
Cool to touch
If happens. D/C IV elevate warm compress
Phlebitis
What is it?
Inflammation of a vein S/S: Red Painful Swelling Warm If happens. D/C, warm compress
Infection
How to identify one?
S/S
Can be localized at IV site
Red with purulent exudate
If this happens culture and change site
Systemic infection may have fever , increased WBC, notify dr.
To discontinue IV
Pull tape off slowly toward the catheter
Remember to chart “ catheter intact”
Apply pressure and dressing
Any complications (hematoma, bleeding) occur follow as if a venipuncture
