Anatomy endocrine Flashcards
Adrenal medulla
Inner section - secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine.
Adrenal Cortex
Outer section - secretes cortisol (sugar), aldosterone (salt), sex hormones
Ovaries
Estrogen and progesterone
Pancreas
Islet of langerhans ( alpha and beta cells ) secrete hormones. Insulin and glucagon. The pancreas also contain cells that are exocrine in function. They secrete digestive enzymes.
Parathyroid glands
Parathyroid hormone
Pituitary glands ( hypophysis)
Located in the sella turcica, composed of an anterior lobe, adenohypophysis, and a posterior lobe neurohypophysis.
Thyroid gland
Secretes thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine, and calcitonin
Adenohypophysis
Anterior pituitary gland
Adrenocorticotropin hormone ACTH stimulates adrenal cortex
Follicle Stimulating Hormone - stimulates hormone secretion and egg production and sperm production.
Growth Hormone (GH) somatotropin - stimulates growth of bones and soft tissues
Luteinizing Hormone (LH) - stimulates ovulation & testosterone secretion.
Prolactin - promotes milk secretion
Somatotropin - (STH) Growth Hormone
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) thyrotropin
Neurohypophysis
Posterior Pituitary Gland
Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) - vasopressin increases resorption of water Oxytocin - (OT) stimulates contractions of the uterus during labor and childbirth
