FINAL EXAM Flashcards
What is blood pressure
The force of the blood pushing against the side of the vessel wall
What is systolic pressure?
The maximum pressure felt on the artery during left ventricular contraction, or systole
What is diastolic pressure?
The elastic recoil, or resting, pressure that the blood exerts constantly between each contraction
What is pulse pressure?
The difference between the systolic and diastolic pressures and reflects the stroke volume
What is mean arterial pressure (MAP)?
The pressure forcing blood into the tissues, averaged over the cardiac cycle
The level of BP is determined by what five factors?
Cardiac output, peripheral vascular resistance, volume of circulating blood, viscosity, elasticity of vessel walls
What are the components of a BP reading in regards to the korotkoff’s sounds/phases?
Note points which you hear first sound (I), muffling of sound(IV), and final disappearance of sound (V).
When the variance is greater than 10 to 12 mm Hg between phases four and five, record both phases along with the systolic reading - eg. 142/98/80
