comparisons
an analogy is similar to metaphors and similie, but more complex and extends the comparison in such a way that the two ideas of objects being discussed might be alike in so many ways that the comparison can be expanded to other areas
analogy
an extended metaphor
synecdoche
refers to the whole of a thing by the name of any one of its party
metonymy
talking about something closely related to the thing
double purpose: breaks up awkwardness and repetition and adds flavor to the writing

a direct ir indirect reference to something which is presumably commonly known, such as an event, book, myth, place, or work of art; allusions can be historical, literary, religious, topical, or mythical; allusions contextualize and provide deeper meaning by relating ideas
