Female Menstrual Cycle 4.8 Flashcards
which days does the flow phase occur?
days one to five
what hormone is secreted during the flow phase (FSH or LH) and where is it secreted from?
the female follicle stimulating hormone is secreted by the anterior pituitary
which days does the follicular phase occur?
follicular phase occurs during days 6-13
what hormone is secreted by follicles during the follicular phase? where is it secreted from?
estrogen is secreted by the follicle cells in the ovary
what day does ovulation occur?
Ovulation occurs at day 14
Where is LH and FSH secreted from?
Female LH and FSH secreted from the anterior pituitary
What days does the luteal phase occur?
Luteal phase occurs between days 15-28
What hormones are secreted during the luteal phase? Where are these hormones secreted from?
Estrogen and progesterone are secreted by the corpus luteum
What does estrogen do in the luteal phase? How does it behave?
Estrogen further prepares the uterus for pregnancy
A second estrogen spike occurs
What is the job of progesterone during the luteal phase? (3)
Prepares uterus for pregnancy by thickening the endometrium
Inhibits further ovulation by negative feedback inhibiting release of LH and FSH
Hold embryo in place by preventing uterine contractions
What happens if fertilization did not occur during the luteal phase?
Progesterone and estrogen levels drop
Uterus contracts and sheds the endometrium
what happens during the flow phase?
shedding of the endometrium (menstruation)
Why does the thickening of the endometrium occur?
thickening of the endometrium is the uterus preparing for pregnancy
why is FSH secreted during the flow phase?
it stimulate the development of the follicle in the ovary
what happens during the follicular phase (specifically to the oocyte)?
follicles develop in the ovary. primary oocyte undergoes meiosis however there is unequal division of cytoplasm and nutrients. So the cells that receive majority of the material becomes the secondary oocyte and contains 23 chromosomes
