Q

What is the job of progesterone during the luteal phase? (3)

A

Prepares uterus for pregnancy by thickening the endometrium

Inhibits further ovulation by negative feedback inhibiting release of LH and FSH

Hold embryo in place by preventing uterine contractions

Q

What happens if fertilization did not occur during the luteal phase?

15
Q

what happens during the follicular phase (specifically to the oocyte)?

A

follicles develop in the ovary. primary oocyte undergoes meiosis however there is unequal division of cytoplasm and nutrients. So the cells that receive majority of the material becomes the secondary oocyte and contains 23 chromosomes

16
Q

How do eggs develope during ovulation?

A

As the cells surrounding the egg develop, a fluid filled cavity forms. Eventually it balloons outward until blood vessels along the outer wall collapse. The wall bursts and the ovum is released. The surrounding follicle remains within the ovary and differentiates into the corpus luteum.

17
Q

What happen happens to estrogen during ovulation phase?

A

Hormone: estrogen production peaks

18
Q

What happens during the luteal phase?

A

Stimulation of the endometrium to prepare the uterus for the egg

19
Q

What happens if fertilization does not occur during the luteal phase?

A

If fertilization does not occur, weak uterine contractions make the endometrium pull away from the uterine wall causing the start of the cycle all over again

20
Q

what happens when LH and FSH are secreted during the luteal phase?

A

Lutenizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone come back up to restart the cycle and prepare for the release of another egg

21
Q

how does estrogen behave during the follicular phase?

A

estrogen secretion continues to secrete during oocyte development

22
Q

what do spikes in LH and FSH do?

A

this stimulates ovulation and the synthesis and maintenance of the corpus luteum
