cellular respiration stages 2 and 4 Flashcards
where do Pyruvate Oxidation, The Krebs Cycle, and The ETC/Chemiosmosis all take place?
the mitochondrial matrix
what types of cells are mitochondria found in?
eukaryotic cells
where does cellular respiration occur in prokaryotic cells?
the cytoplasm
what is the shape of mitochondria?
they are round sausage-shaped organelles
what is the job of mitochondria?
produce large quantities of ATP
what is the restriction of mitochondria?
they can only produce ATP in the presence of oxygen
what is the mitochondria double membrane?
a selectively permeable outer membrane
what is the appearance of the inner membrane of the mitochondria?
a highly folded inner membrane inside the mitochondria
what is the function of the inner membrane of the mitochondria?
to hold enzymes complexes for the electron transport chain so they can pump hydrogen atoms into the inter membrane space for chemiosmosis to occur (and convert oxygen into water)
what stages of cellular respiration occur in the mitochondrial matrix?
pyruvate oxidation and the krebs cycle
what is the intermembrane space?
the space between the outer membrane and the intermembrane
what is the intermembrane space used for?
the formation of the electrochemical gradient
what is an overview of pyruvate oxidation?
two pyruvate molecules from glycolysis are transported through the outer mitochondrial membran, intermembranes space and the inner membrane to the mitochondrial matrix. While this is happening the pyruvate does molecules go through decarboxylation and NAD+ is converted to 2 NADH 2 acetyl Co, 2 CO2,2 H+
why is there a C-S bond between the acetyl and CoA.
the C-S bond is highly unstable. It prepares the two-carbon acetyl group for further oxidation in the Krebs cycle
