What is female genital mutilation
4 main types -
clitrodectomy - removing parts of all cltioris
Type 2- excision- removing clitoris, labia minora + majora
type 3 - infibulation - narrowing vaginal opening by creating seal by repositioning labia
type 4 - other- scraping, piercing, cutting, burning
occurs in girls infancy - before puberty
2% of women in London
Sx and complications female genital mutilation
Constant pain, dyspareunia, bleeding/cyst/abscesses, incontinence,
depression, PTSD, self harm
compl- repeated infection - infrtility
Life threatening complications in labour
Short term - heamorrhage, urinary retention, swelling, infection
Mx of female genital mutilation
If <18 record in notes and report to police and social services
if >18- record in notes, but no obligatory duty to report
canNOT offer deinfibulation
Deinfibulation- offered to those unable to have sex, pass urine, or pregnant at risk during delivrery- give analgesia
