What is Bartholin’s cyst
Cyst or abscess of bartholins gland (greater vestibular glands)- gland on either side of vagina (near bottom)
usually a result of blockage of duct
that CAN become infected
can lead to overlying superinfection by staphylococcus or GBS
RF- nullparitous, previous bartholins cyst, sexuall active
( bartholins can extend in vagina, while labial cyst cannot)
Sx and Ix of Bartholin’s cyst
UNILATERAL labial swelling - one big roung cyst
often asymptomatic/painless
when infected - cardinal signs of infections,
fever dyspareunia, pain on sitting/walking
Ix–
clinical diagnosis–
can do biopsy if over 40y/o
if infected MC&S from absess but most are sterile
Mx and complications of Bartholin’s cyst
Mx - conservative -draining and patient well. Don’t do drainage anymore-it’s not a cure just a sx relief.
Incision and drainage, catheter + OD
masrupialisation -forming open pouch to stop cyst from reforming
complications - rupture, recurrence
