Fatty liver disease Flashcards
When does a person have NAFLD?
When hepatic liver fat contributes to 5% or more of the liver weight
Steatosis/fatty liver is linked to which other diagnosis?
- Insulin resistance
- Hyperglycemia
- Hypertension
What is the main lipid in the liver?
Glycerolipid TAG
How can we measure liver fat content?
- Liver biopsy
- Scanning with MR/MR
- Biomarkers
How prevalent is NAFLD in the world?
(Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease)
25-30%
Hepatic steatosis is inflammation that can be reversed with diet changes, but can cause fibrosis which is?
No longer live liver cells, but connective tissue. Gets harder and looses function
What factors have negative effects on the liver?
Alcohol, tobacco, high fat diet, lack of sleep, abdominal fat and high blood pressure
What two specific nutrients increase the prevalence of NAFLD?
Fructose (triggers lipogenese and triglyceride accumulation).
Saturated fatty acids.
How much of total NAFLD cases occur in lean people?
10-20 %
What are functions of the liver?
- Detoxification
- Metabolism
- Bile Production
- Storage: Stores vitamins and minerals.
- Protein Synthesis
- Manages cholesterol levels
Where in the body does most of the hepatic lipids come from?
Adipose tissue (60%)
