  1. change in social attitudes - among younger generation more likely to accept cohabitation- decline in stigma attached to pre martial sex
  2. secularisation- increase in decline in religious beliefs means that people do not abide by religious rules which may teach that cohabitating is a sin.
  3. increased career opp for women - has freed women from having to rely on their husband for finacical support so women choose to cohabit rather than get married

  1. changes in the law = have made homosexuality legal since 1967 and age of consent is now the same as for heterosexual couple. also homosexual couples now have the right have their relationship legally recognised ( civil partnership act 2005) and to adopt children
  2. changes to social attitudes = society has become more liberal and accepting of homosexual relationships and recognise that any stable relationship is good for children
  3. medical advances - ivf

A

Increase education career and opportunities= people priorities career over relationships

increase in divorce = mother has custody over her children and the father moves out.

  1. greater economic independence of women - greater job opportunities and welfare support enables women to choose and have children without being married as they can support themselves
  2. medical advances - ivf - women can choose to be lone partents
  3. changing social attitudes - less stigma attached being lone, unmarried parent.

secularisation= decline in religion some churches allow marriages by divorced couple , people are not religious

Influence of media= promotes romantic love so even if the first marriage doesn’t go well don’t give up finding “the one”

Housing is too small to support a large family and too expensive for a few income earners to support a large number of people

Needs of economy=people need to move country for work its easier for nuclear family to move than classic extended family

Needs of economy= able to move places to places and its easier to move one parent and children to another town.

Increased social mobility = move through social scales may develop different lifestyles to their extended kin and this will weaken the bonds

Welfare state= provide service which use to be provided by extended in such benefits

Ageing population=more elderly people so young people don’t have grandparents but great grandparents

child-centeredness= people having fewer children as they want to lavish them with care, love and money

Increase life expectancy= people are living longer as a result in improving healthcare so there are several generations in each family.

A

Black :
Lone parent families
Link back to slavery = couples were sold seperatley so if husband was sold wife would look after her children independently.
Create a culture amongst afro caribbean women = self reliance

Asian:
Nuclear or modified extended families
Link to migration patterns = man would have to come to uk on its own followed by his wife and children once they settle they help other relatives
Formed extended families = help each other out

what type of family does m.c and w.c family have?

A

Middle class:
Nuclear families
In pursuit of their education and careers they move away from their extended kin and settle down in areas away from the place of origin. Makes them socially removed from their kin

Working class:
Extended family
Less likely to pursue higher education so they stay living near their extended kin
Also they need financial and childcare support from their relatives
Lone parent families
High divorce rates due to economic problems
