What is explanatory style?
A person’s habitual way of explaining events
What is internal vs external explanatory style?
degree that cause is linked to the self or to the external situation
What is stable vs unstable explanatory style?
degree that the cause is seen as fixed or something temporary
What is global vs specific explanatory style?
Degree that cause is seen as affecting other domains in life or is restricted to affecting one’s specific domain
What is a pessimistic attribution style?
Internal, stable, global attributions habitually made for negative events
What does a pessimistic attribution style predict?
Predicts lower grades and poorer physical health later in life
What is the discounting principle?
Less weight should be given to a particular cause of behaviour if there are other alternatives present
What is emotional amplification?
emotional reaction to counterfactual thoughts increase depending on how easy it is to imagine the alternative
What is actor-observer difference?
A difference in attribution based on who is making the assessment
How does the actor describe the situation?
Situational (external factors)
How does an observer asses a situation?
Dispositional (internal factors)
