exam iii: ch14 Flashcards
approach to addressing a research question that combines quantitative and qualitative research methods in a single study
mixed methods research
what are some strats for mixed methods?
convergent concurrent, exploratory sequential, explanatory sequential
type of MM strat: Selected when a researcher wishes to use quantitative and qualitative methods in an attempt to confirm, cross-validate, or corroborate
convergent concurrent strategy
type of MM strat: Collection of qualitative data followed by collection of quantitative data; used when the researcher is initiating work with an understudied population or subgroup.
exploratory sequential strategy
type of MM strat: allow researchers to use qualitative data to explain quantitative data that was already collected. This allows the quantitative findings to be expanded and put in context; Researcher collects quantitative data and then collects and analyzes qualitative data.
explanatory sequential strategy
a rigorous scientific method that is focused on the end results of patient care.
- purpose: generate internal evidence vs generalizable evidence (like research)
- examine: structure, process, outcome
outcomes research
Reviewing/comparing outcome data from competitor or industry leaders to use as a means of evaluating their own performance.
- A standard or point of reference against which things may be compared.
benchmarking data
t/f: stats and outcomes research has moved away from statistical analysis that used to test for mean group differences and instead focuses on analyzing/exploratory methods for examining data
true
disclosing findings to all involved (publishing, poster presentation, peer-review journals)
dissemination
what are the challenges of mixed methods designs?
teamwork, time commitment, funding, combining data, studies must be carefully designed
what are examples of outcomes research journals?
Journal of nursing care quality
Journal of health econ and outcomes research
The patient: patient centered outcomes research
what is the focal point of qualitative and quantitative research?
the research question
