Wagner Act of 1935
Places the protective power of the federal government firmly behind employee efforts to organize and bargain collectively through representatives of their choice.
Also created the national labor relations board
What are the five unfair labor practices
1) Interfere with, restrain or coerce employees as they exercise their labor rights
2) Dominate or interfere with the formation or administration of labor unions
3) Discriminate in regard to hiring or tenure of employment or any term or condition of employment so as to encourage or discourage membership in any labor organization
4) Discharge or otherwise discriminate against employees because they file charges or give testimony under this act.
5) Refuse to bargain collectively
Define the Taft Hartley Act of 1947
Allowed the U.S. President to temporarily bar national emergency strikes
Defined list of activities as unfair union practices
Why do employees unionize?
Economic needs Higher pay better benefits work hours security better working conditions Dissatisfaction with management practices Employee belief about unions potential benefits of belonging to one
Why don’t managers like Union?
Difficult for managers to discipline employees for bad behavior
Union stresses seniority over performance
Management has less decision making power
More costly (higher wages, better benefits)
