Q

How would you describe relapse prevention to a client?

A

Relapse = a series of lapses, loss of control, return to previous behavior.
* Prevention Consists of:
 High Risk Situation: being in a negative state, social pressure, being positive and saying you deserve it.
 Lack of Coping Skills: decrease self-efficacy and you lapse which develops into a relapse. Depends on ability to cope with a difficulty.
 Overly Positive Outcome Expectancies: previously pleasurable experience associated with particular foods. The significance of those perceptions can lead to the desire for a lapse.
 Negative Reaction to a Lapse: Thinking you have no power to control yourself, so why try and you relapse
 Apparently Irrelevant Decisions: seemingly harmless mini-decisions.
 Lifestyle Imbalance: stress, denial, rationalization
 Urges and Cravings: desire for immediate gratification.
* For Prevention discusses a lapse plan of action and ways to avoid triggers that might cause a lapse.
