Exam 1- Inflammation and Healing M2 Flashcards
What are the three lines of defense?
PB, I, H/CM
- Physical barriers
- inflammation
- humoral/cell mediated
what is an example of a physical barrier?
skin and mucous membranes
what are the 5 cardinal signs of inflammation?
S, P, R, H, LOF
- swelling
- pain
- redness
- heat
- loss of function
during inflammmation, what happens to blood vessels?
they vasodialate
what are some chemical mediated responses to inflammation?
- histamine
- prostagladin
what are the five stages of infectious diseases?
I, P, SD, R, H
- incubation
- prodromial
- specific disease
- recovery
- health
what is the incubation stage?
intial contact to the apperance of the first syptoms
what is the prodromial stage?
NSS
nonspecific syptoms (vague discomfort)
what is the specific disease stage?
disease specific syptoms
what is the convalescence stage?
recovery stage where symptoms begin to subside
what is the health period?
infection is completley down but may become chronic carrier or develop latent infection
what does the chain of infection consist of?
SH, IA, R, PE, MOT, PE
- Susceptiable host
- infectious agent
- resevoir
- portal exit
- mode of transmission
- portal entry
How does the nurse find a WBC blood count?
CBC (complete blood count)
what is a CBC diffrential?
a test that indicates what kind of WBC populating the blood
what is the term used for increased WBC’s
leukocytosis
what causes an increased WBC count?
infection
what is a blood culture?
to see if pathogens are infecting the pt. blood
what are local clinical manifestations of infection?
ER, ED, W, P/D
- erythmea
- edema
- warmth
- pus/ drainage
what are systemic clinical manifestations?
F, Fat, W, M, H, BA
- fever
- fatigue
- weakness
- malaise
- headache
- body aches
what are the five inflammatory exudates?
- serous
- purlent
- hemmorhagic
- fibroinous
- catarrhal
what is exudate?
Collection of debris and fluid from inflammatory process
what is Serous exudate?
- skin
- blisters
- pericarditis
what is fibrinous execudate?
following surgery adhesion
what is hemorrhagic excudate?
hematoma
what is catarrhal exudate?
common cold with runny nose
what is purulent excudate?
pause, along with abscess, boils, and cellulitis
what are the two pathophysiology of inflammation?
vascular response and cellular response
