Eukaryotic cells 4 - Plant organelles Flashcards
What is a vacuole
any fluid filled space inside the cytoplasm surrounded by a memrbane
what is the vacuole surrounded by
Tonoplasts
What are tonoplasts
specilaised membrane that surrounds the permanent vacuole in plant cells and controls movements of substances into and out of the cell sap
What is the vacuole filled with
Cell sap
What is cell sap
an aqueous solution that fills the permanent vacuole
how does cell sap move into the cells
Osmosis
What is the result of the cell sap entering the cell
the cytoplasm is kept pressed against the cell wall this in turn keeps the cell turgid (swollen) and the whole plant upright
what is another use of a vacuole
storage of a number of diffrent substances
vacuoles can store proteins in the cells of seeds and fruits
Vacuoles often store waste products and other chemicals
What do mitchondria and chlorplasts have in common
Contain there own DNA
Surrounded by an outer membrane
Have an enormously folded inner membrane that gives a greatly increased surafce area on which enzyme controlled reactions take place
What are some diffrences between cholorplasts and mitochondria
Chlorplasts :
are the site for photosynthesis
Contain chlorphyll
are formed from a type of relatively unspeacilised plant organelle known as a lecuplast
What are amyloplasts
plant organelles that store starch
Describe the structure of chrorplasts in relation to their role in PS
The thyklanoids membrane are the site for light independent reactions
The thykaloids membranes provide space for H+ ions
ATPase in thyalkoid membranes
