Ethical and socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport (drugs, hooliganism/spectator behaviour) Flashcards
Disadvantages of taking performance enhancing drugs (PEDs)
>if caught, stripped off medals/ prizes >if caught, lose sponsorship contract >lead to ban >seriuos side effects and health risks >reputation and credibility of sport is damaged >cheating and unethical
Why take drugs to enhance performance?
>increased chance of success >create a level playing field >recover quickly from injury >wealth >fame from winning >improve physical characteristics > pressure from others to compete immoraly
What athletes benefit from PEPTIDE HORMONES?
epo
> endurance events
>marathons
What are performance enhancing drugs?
PED
substances or methods used by athletes to improve their performances often with harmful side effects which are all banned
Effects of ANABOLIC STEROIDS
build muscle/ bone mass increasing strength and allows harder training
Atheletes who will benefit from ANABOLIC STERIODS
> weight lifter
>100m sprinter
Effects of BETA BLOCKERS
lowers your heart rate and reduces anxiety levels
Athletes who would benefit from BETA BLOCKERS
> archery
>snooker
Effect of DIURETICS
increases the amount of urine produced which helps weight loss
What athletes would benefit from DIURECTICS
> jockey
>boxer
Effect of NARCOTIC ANALGESICS
help reduce pain, especially during excersise
What athletes benefit from NARCOTIC ANALGESICS
> swimmer
boxer
rugby
Effect of STIMULANTS
increase alertness and overcome tiredness
What athletes benefit from STIMULANTS
> tennis players
>footballer
Effect of PEPTIDE HORMONES epo
increases the number of red blood cells which provides more oxygen and increases muscle mass
Side effects of taking ANABOLIC STEROIDS
>liver cancer >infertility >hairloss >acne >aggression >depression >high blood pressure, heart attack, heart disease
Side effects of taking BETA BLOCKERS
> nausea
heart disease
tiredness
Side effects of taking DIURECTICS
> dehydration
increased risk of heart and kidney failure
risk or muscle cramps
headaches/ tiredness
Side effects of NARCOTIC ANALGESICS
> respiratory depression
increased risk of constipation
addictive
increased pain may lead to further injury
What is a drug?
a substance that has physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body
Side effects of STIMULANTS?
>increased risk of headaches >high blood pressure >risk of strokes >risk of irregular heart beat >risk of anxiety >addictive and overdose can kill you >cause poor judgement leading to accidents
Side effects of PEPTIDE HORMONES
> blood becomes more viscous
increased risk of heart attack
increased risk of stroke and embolism (blockage in the blood vessel)
What is BLOOD DOPING?
1) remove blood a couple weeks before competition
2) freeze the blood
3) human blood replenishes in the mean time
4) 1-2 days before competetion the frozen blood is thawed and reinjected
5) the body now has more thicker and more blood carrying more o2
Dangers of BLOOD DOPING?
> thickening of blood- overincreasing blood volume
potential for heart attack
potential infection from needles
blocking of blood vessels
