Epithelial tissue Flashcards
What are the 4 basic tissue types?
Epithelial, connective, muscular, nervous.
what is the definition of tissue?
Groups of cells with a common role.
What are epithelial cells/epithelial tissue?
covers and line body surface and cavities.
Are the cells close together or far apart?
They are close together like continuous sheets.
What is the term given to the free surface covered by epithelial cells?
Apical surface.
Epithelial tissue is avascular, what does this mean?
Contains no blood vessels.
Does epithelial tissue have a high capacity for cell divisions?
Yes.
Does epithelial tissue have nerve supply?
Yes.
There are 2 categories of epithelial cell, what are they?
Simple - 1 layer of cells
stratified - more than 1 layer of cells.
Name the 4 cell shapes.
squamous, cuboidal, columnar, transitional (changes shape)
Describe simple squamous epithelium.
)Single layer of flat cells,
)Important for filtration in kidneys & diffusion in lungs and capillaries.
When is simple epithelium called ‘endothelium’?
When it is lining the heart, blood and lymphatic vessels.
When is simple epithelium called mesothelium?
When in serous (watery) membranes - lines the body cavity that doesn’t open to the exterior, eg pleura, pericardium and peritoneum.
what does endothelium line in the body?
heart, blood and lymphatic vessels.
what does mesothelium line in the body?
cavities not open to exterior - pleura, pericardium, peritoneum.
