What makes up the appendicular skeleton?
Pectoral (shoulder) girdles,
upper limbs,
pelvic (hip) girdle,
lower limbs.
What is the function of the pectoral (shoulder) girdle?
Attaches bones of upper limbs to axial skeleton.
What are the 2 bones included in the pectoral girdle?
Right & left clavicle (collar bone),
scapula (shoulder blade).
What are the 3 bones included in the upper limb?
Humerus - upper arm bone,
Ulna - medial bone,
Radius - lateral bone
How many bones are in the wrist and what are they called?
Carpus (carpals); 8 bones.
How many bones in the hand and what are the called?
5 bones, called metacarpals. 1-5 starting with thumb.
How many bones are in the fingers and what are they called?
There are 14 bones, called phalanges.
Describe phalanges.
Each finger except thumb has 3 phalanges; proximal, medial, & distal.
Thumb has no medial.
Pelvic (hip) bones are also referred as…
Coxal bones.
Pelvic girdle includes 2 hip bones, where are they joined at the front ?
At the pubic symphysis.
Pelvic girdle includes 2 hip bones, where are they joined at the back?
Attached to sacrum = sacroiliac joint
Between male & female, which pelvis is lighter, wider, shallower, larger and oval?
Female pelvis.
Are the male and female sacrums the same or different
Different, the female sacrum is wider and shorter.
What bones are included in the lower limbs?
Femur- thigh bone,
patella - kneecap infront of knee joint.
Tibia - large medial, weight bearing bone of leg (shin bone)
Fibula- lateral to tibia & smaller.
Tarsus (ankle) has how many bones?
