Epidermis Flashcards
Stratum corneum
Many layers of dead, scaly, keratinized cells. Accounts for 3/4 of the epidermal thickness.
What are the layers of the epidermis from top to bottom?
Stratum corneum Stratum lucidum Stratum granulosum Stratum spinosum Stratum basale
Stratum lucidum
A thin translucent zone, and may contribute to fingerprints.
ONLY IN THICK SKIN
Stratum granulosum
3-5 layers of flat keratinocytes.
Keratinocytes burst to waterproof skin
Stratum spinosum
Consists of several layers of keratinocytes dividing and pushing their way to the surface.
Langerhans are found here
Stratum Basale
Single cuboidal layer of 3 types of cells which divide to make new epidermal cells.
Epidermis
Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
Keratinocytes, melanocytes, merkel cells, & langerhans
Dermis
The dermis regulates temperature and supplies the epidermis with nutrient-saturated blood. It contains most of the skin’s specialised cells and structures such as blood vessels, hair follicles, nerve endings, lymph vessels and sweat glands.
