Energy Metabolism- Part 1 Flashcards
What is the main concept that glucose is used for?
ENergy
What type of energy does glucose provide
Growth and maintenance of body tissues
Electrical conduction of nervous tissues
mechanical use of muscles
heat production to maintain body temp
What are the 3 major parts to energy being burned
basal metabolic rate
exercise
thermic effect of food
non exercising activity thermogeneisis
Describe Glucose metabolism after a meal- kidney
- Glycose is absorbed from the intestine into the liver
- Glycose is stored as glycogen
- excess glycogen= fatty acids which form triglycerides
- triglicerides can form lipoproteins which leave the liver into the blood stream and can be stored within adipose
Describe Glucose metabolism after a meal- muscle
Glucose can be taken up by skeletal muscle and tored as glycogen
- brains main source of energy is glucose
Metabolism of proteins after eating
- amino acids are absorbed from the blood to the liver
amino acids are taken up by the liver and made into proteins
Metabolism of Lipids
- Chylomicron are passed through the lymphatic system to the thoracic duct
- Chymicron enters the blood system via the thoracic duct. in the blood stream the chymicron is broken down into triglycerides
- triglycerides are absorbed into the liver
- triglycerides are released as lipoprotein
- Lipoproteins are used as energy in muscles or stored in adipose
