Energy Intake, Energy Expendature And Energy Balance Flashcards
Define energy intake (EI)
EI is the total calories consumed by food or drink
Define energy expenditure (EE)
EE is the total calories used
How do you work out EE
EE = BMR + physical activity + thermic effect
Define energy balance
Energy balance is the relationship between EI and EE
Define basil metabolic rate (BMR)
BMR is their lowest amount of calories needed to carry out the bodies physiological processes at rest after 8 hours sleep and 12 hours fasted
Define positive energy balance
A positive energy balance is where EI is more than EE and you will gain weight
Define negative energy balance
A negative energy balance is where EE is more than EI and so you will loose weight
Define what a neutral energy balance is
A neutral energy balance is where EE is the same a sEI and so you mentain weight
What is the range of MET’s for moderate intensity exercise
2-5 MET’s
What is the MET value to which over is high intensity exercise
6+ MET’s
How do you work out your BMR per hour
BMR per hour = ((KG x 24) x body fat range) divided by 24
what is MET
MET is where VO2 = 3.5ml/kg/hr
Define MET
MET is a physiological meausure expressing the energy expenditure during physical activities
Define thermic effect
Thermic effect is the energy/calories used in the process of eating, digestion good and absorbing food
