Aerobic Training, V02 Max And The Factors Effecting It Flashcards
Define aerobic capacity
Aerobic capacity is the ability for the body to inhale, transport and utilise 02 to perform a period of sustained aerobic/sub-maximal activity
Aerobic capacity is a key aspect of fitness for what sports
When the performer must work sub-maximally for long periods of time
Define V02 max (maximal oxygen uptake)
The maximum amount of 02 the body can inspire, transport and utilise per minute during exhaustive exercise
What are the 4 factors effecting V02 max
- Individual physiological make up
- Age
- Gender
- Training
What is the effect of individual physiological make up
More effective cardio-vascular and respiratory systems means you have a higher V02 max
Explain the effect of individual physiological make up
Individuals with large lung volumes, strong ventricle muscles, more slow oxidative muscle fibres are able to inhale, transport and utilise more 02
What is the effect of training on V02 max
By aerobically training you are able to increase your V02 max by 10-20 percent
Explain the effects of training on V02 max
Long periods of aerobic training causes cardiac hypertrophy, increased respiratory muscle function, increased levels of red blood cells and mitochondria
What effect does age have on V02 max
V02 max peaks at 20 years old and declines by around 1% each year after that
Explain the effect of age on VO2 max
Loss of elasticity/recoil of lung, heart and blood vessel muscles and reduces the efficiency of the CV system
What effect does gender have on VO2 max
Males tend to have a higher VO2 max than women by 15-30 percent
Explain the effect of gender on VO2 max
Males tend to have larger lung and blood volumes and a larger heart to take in and transport more O2. They also tend to have a higher muscle mass to utilise more O2
