Biomechanics - The Components Of A Level System Flashcards
Define what a lever is
A lever is ridged structure or bar that moves around a pivot
Define resistance
Resistance is the weight of the lever arm and anything attached to it
Define effort
Effort is the force of muscle contraction applied to move the lever
Define fulcrum
The fulcrum is the fixed point about which the lever moves
Define effort arm
The effort arm is the perpendicular or right angle distance between the effort and the fulcrum
Define load arm
The load arm is the perpendicular or right angle distance between the load and the fulcrum
Which side of the elbow joint does the tricep brachii attach
On the side of the humerus bone
What two factors determine the effect of a force within a lever system
- Size of force (greater force = greater effect)
2. Distance from force to fulcrum (greater distance = greater effect)
How is a mechanical advantage classified
A mechanical advantage is classified by the effort arm being longer than the load arm
How is a mechanical disadvantage classified
A mechanical disadvantage is classified by the load arm being greater than the effort arm
What is the advantage of a mechanical advantage
You can move a lot of weight with little effort (short ROM)
What is the advantage of a mechanical disadvantage
You can move a large range of motion quickly
