ENERGY AND GENETICS Flashcards

1
Q

what is the most common energy called

what unites the most common energy

  • what happens when the bond is broken
A

Chemical energy is the most common

It is the chemical bond that unites atoms or molecules

When a bond is broken and atoms are released, the energy in the bond is released as well

Q

What is the role of energy in the body

A

Energy is needed to:

Circulate blood, lymph and tissue fluid throughout the body

Breathing and taking in oxygen

Making new cells

Growth and repair

Transmit nerve impulses/movement

Build enzymes and hormones

Digest food

Q

what is catabolism
what is anabolism
what is metabolism

A

The chemical breakdown of complex substances such as carbohydrates protein and glucose , is accompanied by the release of energy.

Anabolism is the opposite to catoblism , it is the building up of larger molecules from smaller ones , for example proteins from amino acids
-building muscle tissues v
Creating new cells
Minerlise bone

Metabolism: the rate at which energy is
released from cells. Metabolism involves both catabolism and anabolism.

Q

how does the body use energy

A

the body is very good at coverting chemical energy from digestion into other forms of energy
- heat to keep us warm
- kinetic energy to move about
electrical energy to send nerve impulses
- sound energy to speak or make noise

Q

ENDOTHERMIC AND EXOTHERMIC

A
  • the new bond is made between two atoms , energy is needed to form it( cooler than surroundings)
  • When a bond is broken and atoms are
released, the energy in the bond is released
    as well (EXOTHERMIC REACTIONS)

Q

Aerobic respiration

A

Aerobic Respiration:
• Uses oxygen to release energy from
glucose,
• can only take place inside cells.
• Where?
• does the work of cells, tissues

Q

Anaerobic respiration

A

robic Respiration:
Usage of energy without oxygen uses up energy faster than the body
can take in oxygen through breathing
Occurs in striated muscle during vigorous exercise such as 100m
sprint
• Bi-product is lactic acid,
• the body can only tolerate certain levels before enzyme conversion becomes
impossible.
• Anaerobic energy is less efficient and produces less energy.

Q

what is the law of conersation of energy

A

according to this law , energy can neither be created or destryoed , however it can be transformed from one form into another, forms invlude chemical heat and sond energy
