digestive system Flashcards
what is the salivary gland
three salivary glands
parotoid gland - alongside jaw
sublingual gland- under tonuge
submandibular- underneath chin
- responsiblity
secretes saliava which contains enzymes called salivary amylase
( salivary amylase responsible for digestion of carbohydrates, lubricating mouth and helping bolus formation)
the labels of organs in the digestive system
mouth
salivary gland
osephus
liver( right abdomen)
stomach( left side )
pancreas( under stomach)
doedum( ending of stomach)
ileum ( squiggling in the middle)
colon( upper large intestines
cecum( lower large intestine)
retcum
anus
what is osphugus
muscular tube,
transport food from mouth to stomach
bolus only here for a few seconds, no are enzymes are secreted here
epiglottis- flap covering the opening of the trachea
what is the stomach
Non-striated muscle in three layers, epithelium, gastric glands( structure)
the stomach stores food for around 3 hours
-stomach wall churns food around and pour secrecration ( HLA and protase ) from gastric gland
chyme passed to dudenum
what is the liver
structure- Cuboid epithelial cells in lobules.
Large number of functions such as secretes bile and salts, stores glycogen etc.
pancreas
glandular epithelium
secreates pancreaticc juicies , it ccontains three main enzymes
tryspin(a protase) which is invloved in breaking proteins into peptides and amino acids
pancreatic amylases- for the breakdown of starches
pancreatic lipase- the breakdown of lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
function- make insulin, requiured yo metablise glucose and glucogen and stores glucose
dodenum
Duodenum
C-shaped part of the small intestine lying beyond the stomach.
Two coats of non-striated muscle, lined by columnar epithelium.
Passes chyme to ileum and secretes major digestive secretions.
ileum
Long coiled part of small intestines joined to duodenum
- two coats of non straited muscle and vili lined by columnar epithelium
- passes undisgestive to colon , absorbs nutrients to blood stream
