ENDTERM PART 3 Flashcards
the risk associated to biological
toxins or infectious agents.
Biorisk
unintentional exposure to unauthorized access, accidental release or loss, theft, misuse, diversion or intentional unauthorized release of biohazards
Biorisk
the integration of
biosafety & biosecurity to manage risks when working with biological toxins & infectious agents (CWA 15793)
Biorisk management
a system or process to control safety &
security risks associated with the handling or storage & disposal of biological agents & toxins in laboratories & facilities ( CWA
15793:2011)
Biorisk management
Biorisk management is divided into
- A= assessment
- M=mitigation
- P= performance
Initial step in implementing BRM and includes identification of hazards &
characterization of risks
Risk assessment
anything that has a potential to
cause harm
hazard
generally defined as the possibility that
something unpleasant will happen
risk
Steps in doing risk assessment
- Define the situation
- Define the risks
- Characterize the risk
- Determine if risks are acceptable or not
These are actions & control measures that are put into place to reduce or eliminate the risks associated with biological agents & toxins
Mitigation Procedures
5 Mitigating measures
- Elimination
- Substitution
- Engineering control
- Administrative controls
- Personal protective equipment
most difficult and most effective control measure
Elimination
replacement of the procedures
or biological agent with a similar entity to
reduce the risk
Substitution
includes physical changes
in work stations, equipment , production
facilities or any other relevant aspect of work environment that can reduce or prevent exposure
Engineering control
policies, standards, & guidelines used to control risks. This includes proficiency & competency training of lab staff
Administrative controls
