what is endometritis
inflammation of the inner lining of the uterus (endometrium); often associated with PID
what are the typical causes of acute endometritis
compromised abortion, delivery, medical instruments (IUD) and retention of placenta fragments
what are the most common causative agents
chlamydia, gonorrhoea, Group B streptococcus, mycoplasma, tuberculosis
what infective organism usually causes chronic endometritis
tuberculosis
Pyometra can be seen endometritis, what is it?
This is stenosis of the cervical OS and accumulation of discharge and infection seen in elderly women
what are the symptoms of pyometra
abdominal pain
symptoms of endometritis
blood stained discharge, occasional pain, fever (low grade or high grade)
endometritis vs endometriosis
Endometritis = inflammation of the uterus lining caused by infection
Endometriosis = lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus causing abdominal and pelvic pain
what are major causes
normal vaginal bacteria and STDs
what is seen on examination of endometritis
cervical motion tenderness adnexal tenderness uterine tenderness presence of risk factors lower abdominal pain fever abnormal cervical or vaginal discharge
what does a bimanual examination of endometritis show
uterine tenderness
blood investigations may show increase of what?
increase in white blood cells due to the presence of infection
severe disease may be treated with
IV clindamycin + gentmycin
mild disease may be treated with
ceftriaxone + oral metronidazole
chronic disease may be treated with
doxycycline
