what is a Bartholin gland
A
- pair of gland located on both sides of the vaginal introitus (vaginal opening)
- pea sized glands and non-palpable

what causes Bartholin cyst
A
• blockage of duct = Bartholin cyst

what happens in Bartholin cyst
A
glands swell with a size of 1-4cm (unilaterally) + tender

infection of Bartholin cyst results in?
A
Bartholin abscess which is tender, hot and potentially draining pus

how does it resolve
A
• usually self-resolving with good hygiene, analgesia and warm compression

why may biopsy be needed
A
to rule out vulval malignancy but not routinely indicated

treatment
A
• antibiotics for Bartholin abscess + culture = E.coli (most common cause)

surgical treatment
A
word catheter (Bartholin gland balloon & local analgesia) or marsupialization (under general anesthesia)
