what is a functional cyst
• Functional cyst = normal physiological functioning of the ovaries
what are the 2 types of functional cyst
follicular & corpus luteum cyst
when does most cyst occur
• between puberty and menopause
what increases the risk of functional cyst
smoking
what are follicular cyst
- Follicular cyst= often asymptomatic but large cyst can cause pelvic pain & dyspareunia ovarian torsion
- Follicular cyst = <8cm
what are Lutein cyst
pelvic pain, amenorrhoea or delayed menses
• Lutein cyst tend to be larger than follicular cyst, they are also more firm/solid on palpation
what is seen on examination
a torsed cycst will cause pain and rebound tenderness
how is diagnosis made
Pelvic ultrasound
treatment
dependant on age and size of cyst
If premenarchal > 2cm treat with exploratory laparotomy
If in reproductive age and cyst < 6cm; observe for 6 weeks
If in reproductive age and cyst >8cm; treat with exploratory laparotomy
