Endocrine Organs/Terms Flashcards
Anatomy & Physiology: Thyroid
Structure: Butterfly shaped
Location: Dark lateral lobes straddle the trachea.
Function: Regulates metabolism
Anatomy & Physiology: Thymus
Structure: Glandular
Location: Superior to (partly covering) the heart
Function: T cells (immunity)
Anatomy & Physiology: Pancreas
Structure: Has two lobes, and looks like it’s composed of chewed gum.
Location: lying under the stomach and near the small intestine (anterior to adrenals and kidneys)
Function: Regulates blood sugar levels; secretes glucagon and insulin
Anatomy & Physiology: Adrenal Glands
Structure: Small paired glands
Location: Seen above and medial to each kidney in the abdominal cavity
Function: corticosteroids important in preventing stress and abnormalities of water and electrolyte balance in the body
Anatomy & Physiology: Ovaries
Location: dorsal abdominal cavity, just behind the kidneys
Function: Estrogen and progesteron
Anatomy & Physiology: Testies
Structure: Sac-like
Location: hangs below the anus
Function: Production of testosterone
Anatomy & Physiology: Heart
Structure: hollow muscular organ
Location: in mediastinum covered by pericardium
Function: Pumps blood, nutrients, and oxygen. Removes waste and carbon dioxide.
Anatomy & Physiology: Spleen
Structure: flattened brown organ
Location: curves around the lateral aspect of the stomach
Function: Stores blood, removes cellular waste, and gets rid of old or damaged cells. A part of the immune system.
