As with metformin, they can cause ovulation to resume in premenopausal women with PCOS
A/E heart failure, increased risk fractures & osteopenia
Pioglitazone- increased risk of bladder cancer
Rosiglitazone- cardiac problems
GLP 1 agonist
Gulping ‘tide’ pods is not safe
Incretin mimetics
Treat type 2 diabetes and promotes weight loss
Semaglutide, Liraglutide, exenatide
A/E pancreatitis
SGLT 2 inhibitors
Flowzin through the urine
Dapagliflozon, empagliflozin, canagliflozin
A/E- glucosuria, dehydration, hyperkalamia, vaginal yeast infection
Alpha glucosidase inhibitors
Acarb=without carb
Acarbose
A/E- bloating, gas, GI upset
Amylin analogues
Pramlintide
Works with insulin
A/E hypoglycaemia
DPP 4 inhibitors
Liptin makes you pp 4 more times
Saxagliptin, sitagliptin, linagliptin
A/E- urinary and respiratory tract infection
Meglitinides
Similar to SU
Nateglinide, repaglinide
A/E hypoglycaemia
Sulfonylureas
I’de take my SU
Increase insulin release by opening Ca2+ and blocking K+
Glimeperide, glyburide, glipizide
A/E hypoglycaemia, disulfuram like reactions
Displace coumadin from protein leading to toxicities of warfarin
Metformin
Used in PCOS as well
Increase glycolysis, glucose uptake and inhibit gluconeogensis
A/E metabolic acidosis, vitamin B12 deficiency
When contrast in diagnosis is used together with metformin, renal function is affected
Propylthiouracil
Inhibit iodide oxidation and iodouracil coupling
DOA in 1st trimester, thyroid storm
A/E- severe liver injury (BBW), agranulocytosis, dermatologic reactions, GI upset
Methimazole
DOA in 2nd and 3rd trimester
A/E less liver injury, dermatologic reaction, agranulocytosis
Cabergoline
Dopamine D2 agonist
Used in treatment of hyperprolactinaemia
Amylin analog
Pramlintide
Inhibits postprandial glucagon release,Improves satiety
When given with insulin, reduce insulin dose to 50%
Avoided in gastroparesis patients
