Embolism Flashcards
Emboli definition
Movement of abnormal material not mixing with blood from site of apparition to another part of the body
Why can’t emboli occur in veins ?
Because embolus goes from areas of large diameter to small diameter which is not the case in venous circulation
Types of emboli
Thrombus ( 90% of cases) Lipids droplets Gas Fragments of bone marrow brain or liver. Atheromatous plaques Tumeurs fragments Parasites Bullets
Pulmonary embolism origin
Right side of heart or venous thrombosis
Paradoxical embolus
Septal defect leading to passage of venous thrombosis to arterial circulation
Fate of pulmonary emboli
If small can be lysed
Can be organized and incorporated into vascular wall
Acute respiratory disorder if large
Sudden death if massive ( right heart failure)
Origin of most of systemic thromboembolism
Heart
Atheromatous plaques in aorta
