ELS (LG 2) Flashcards
Solid earth that includes the continental and ocean crust. It is not static (unchanging) but it surface (crust) is in a constant state.
Geosphere
Layers of the earth
crust, upper mantle, lower mantle, outer core, inner core
Earth’s outermost layer
Crust
Denser and thinner, mainly composed of basalt.
Oceanic crust
Less dense and thicker, mainly composed of granite
Continental crust
Thick layer of rock inside the planet. Temperature range approximately 500k at the upper boundary.
Upper mantle
Made of solid rock, characterized by extremely high pressure and temperature
Lower mantle
Fluid layer about 2,260 km thick composed of mostly iron and nickel.
Outer core
Innermost layer of the earth. Incredibly dense composed of iron and nickelThe innermost
Inner core
“Life zone” which includes all living organism
Biosphere
Hierarchy in the biosphere
Food chain

- surface
- under the surface
- atmosphere
