What is another name for lateral epicondylitis?
Tennis elbow
What is lateral epicondylitis?
Repetitive strain injury at the insertion of the extensor muscles of the forearm (posterior compartment)
What can cause lateral epicondylitis?
Tennis/resisted extension of the wrist
What test can be done to aid a clinical diagnosis of lateral epicondylitis?
Hold lateral epicondyle and resist extension of the wrist - will have localised pain over the lateral epicondyle
Management of tennis elbow and golfers elbow?
Rest, NSAIDs, physio
V rare to have surgery
Why are injections risky in medial epicondylitis?
because there is a risk of damaging the ulnar nerve
Is OA common in the elbow?
Primary OA - no
Secondary OA after an intra-articular fracture - more common
What is cubital tunnel syndrome?
compression neuropathy due to compression of the ulnar nerve by the Osborne fascia/ heads of the flexor carpi ulnaris in the cubital tunnel
Symptoms of cubital tunnel syndrome?
pain, weakness & tingling in ulnar 1.5 fingers (pinky and ring finger)
+ve tinels test
Management of cubital tunnel syndrome?
Rest
Decompression surgery
