Benign MSK tumours Flashcards
Name 7 benign bone tumours?
Osteochondroma Enchondroma Simple bone cyst Aneurysmal bone cyst Giant cell tumour Fibrous dysplasia Osteoid osteoma
what is the most common benign tumour of chondrocytes?
Osteochondroma
What would show a bony spur growing off the bone with a cartilaginous cap, typically around the knee?
Osteochondroma
Why do enchondromas form?
failure of normal enchondral ossification at the growth plate, resulting in an intramedullary, metaphyseal cartilaginous bone tumour
Management of enchondroma?
curettage and bone growth to strengthen bone
What is the difference between a simple bone cyst and aneurysmal bone cyst?
simple = single cavity fluid filled cyst. Asymptomatic aneurysmal = cyst with multiple chambers, filled with blood/serum. Painful
How are bone cysts (simple and aneurysmal) managed?
Curettage and bone graft
What would have a soap bubble appearance on X-ray?
Giant Cell Tumour
what is a giant cell tumour?
tumour of multi-nucleated osteoclast-like giant cells, usually at the epiphysis of long bones (especially around the knee)
what is fibrous dysplasia?
lesions of fibrous tissue and immature bone due to genetic mutation
who is usually affected by fibrous dysplasia?
children
what is osteoid osteoma?
benign tumour of osteoblasts
what would show immature bone surrounded by a sclerotic halo on imaging?
osteoid osteoma
where are the common sites for osteoid osteomas?
proximal femur, vertebrae and diaphysis of long bone
what is the classic presentation of osteoid osteoma?
Intense pain that is worse at night and relieved by NSAIDs
